The FBI and Black Religion

This talk will explore the history of the FBI’s engagement of black faith communities. In addition to the Bureau’s notorious Counter Intelligence Program (COINTELPO), the lecture will also explore other ways the FBI attempted to utilize and partner with black clergy. In the end, this history helps us to make sense of the Bureau’s current activities.
Lerone A. Martin is associate professor of religious studies and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Centennial Chair and director of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Research and Education Institute at Stanford University. He is currently writing a book on the relationship between the FBI and white Christian Nationalism, to be published by Princeton University Press in 2022.
